Mesopotamian Religion
- Mesopotamia had a large and complex religious system.
- Each city had their own god, and religion was often the backbone of science and discovery.
- They believed that anything that occurred was a result of a preplan by the gods.
- The four main gods of the Mesopotamians were: Enlil - air-god, Enki-water god, and Ninhursag, the mother earth goddess.
- They believed that temples were the gateway from heaven to Earth, a main reason why they built so many of them.
Mesopotamian Physical Geography
- The Tigris and Euphrates rivers were the mainstay of the region.
- The Fertile Crescent, or the area encompassing the rivers, was known for rich soil and abundant animals and plants.
- The name "Mesopotamia" means 'land between rivers.'
- A main reason the region was the 'cradle of civilization' was because of its unique geographical factors.
Mesopotamian Government
- In this government, the King shared power with an elected assembly.
- Later on, the King took the place of a religous figure.
- The Mesopotamian government were among the first governments to tax the people.
